Password Management Tools

Password Tools

There are many password tools available to help you securely store your passwords. Instead of leaving a written list of passwords on your desk, try one of these tools. Though it may seem insecure to keep all that information on a computer, these applications have been developed to protect your information.

  • IdentityFinder Password Vault: This tool will only store your passwords. It does not connect to the internet and will not autofill any forms for you.
  • Kee Pass: This free application will work with Windows or Mac as well as on mobile devices. It will both store your passwords and fill in forms for you.
  • Last Pass: This application has two versions, free and paid. Both are great tools for storing passwords on Windows, Mac, or mobile devices. The application will fill in forms for you.

Using LastPass

LastPass is a very simple tool to use and it will securely store your passwords. When you are logged into LastPass, it will prompt you to save log-in information as you fill out usernames and passwords. These credentials will then be found in your vault. It can also store information you frequently use to fill out forms. It is accessible online from any computer from a log-in page where you provide your email address and master password. This master password is not stored by LastPass so it is not recoverable if you forget it. Once you have logged in, you have access to your "vault" of the passwords that you have stored. What follows is a guide to downloading, installing, and using LastPass.

First, navigate to the LastPass downloads page. Choose the version you would like to use: Mac, Windows, Linux, or mobile.

Once you have downloaded the version you would like to use, you may receive a message like the one below. Choose to save the file.

This will launch the LastPass wizard. Follow the instructions in the wizard to install their plug-in for your browser.

At the end of the wizard, you will be prompted to create a LastPass account. Enter an email account, password, and password prompt. There is no way to recover the master password, so be sure to make is something memorable.

After clicking next, you will be prompted to reenter your password.

Re-enter the password and save. Your account has been created and the LastPass website will open in your browser. There, you can log in and enter your information.

The LastPass plugin which you installed in the wizard will also give you a prompt every time you enter log-in credentials in a website. You can choose to save the username and password or not. If you choose to save the credentials, this confirmation window will open.
