Apple TV

Apple TV is a useful tool to facilitate wireless presentation of lectures or meetings.

Locations in use

Gross Anatomy lab (3 locations)
- The Gross Anatomy Lab has three flat panel televisions with Apple TVs connected. One 60" and Two 32". While standing anywhere in the room an instructor can select and connect to any of the three televisions and share their iPad screen. Used in conjunction with an app such as Netter's Atlas, this works well as a teaching tool. At any point in time a student with an iPhone or an iPad can share their own screen with any of the televisions to relay pictures they have taken or live video streaming directly from an iOS device of an ongoing dissection being captured.

To connect via wireless, you must be using a laptop running Apple's Mountain Lion Operating System or newer, or have an iPhone, iPod, or iPad running iOS 4.3 or later.

You must also be connected to the Tufts wireless network (tuftswireless) in order to see the Apple TV. If you are on the Tufts wired network or the Tufts guest wireless network, you will not be able to see the AppleTV.

The AppleTV has an ethernet port, which may be used, but in order to connect to the device, you must be attached to the same segment of the network as the device. If the device is plugged in via ethernet, it will only be accessible from devices connected using an ethernet cable to the same segment of the network.

Connecting to the Apple TV from iOS devices (AirPlay)

Minimum requirements for AirPlay Mirroring

For best performance, make sure that your system meets AirPlay Mirroring minimum requirements.

iPhone 3GS, iPad 2 (and later), iPod touch (2nd generation) with iOS 5 and later
Device should be connected (registered) on the Tufts Network (tuftswireless). Guest wireless network (tufts-guest) can’t be used for Air Play.

Registering iOS device on the Tufts network

Turn on Wi-Fi on your iOS device.
Connect to “tuftswireless” network
Open a web browser. If you are redirected to https://portal.net.tufts.edu , use your Tufts username and password to register the device. If you can browse the web, you have already a registered device.

Enabling AirPlay Mirroring from your iPhone or iPad

Enable AirPlay Mirroring from your iPhone or iPad directly from the recently used apps section in iOS:

Connect your iPhone or iPad and your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network (tuftswireless)
On your iOS device, double-click the Home Button to display your recently used apps.
Swipe your recently used apps twice from left to right until you see the icon.
Tap the icon to display a list of available AirPlay devices
Enable AirPlay Mirroring* from this menu by tapping the name of your Apple TV, then toggle the on/off slider to ON.

Securing the Apple TV

The AppleTV does not include a security slot used in most laptops to accept a security cable. Boxes, or metal plates that get glued to the bottom of the AppleTV may be necessary for physical security.

The AppleTV may be password protected or left open. In either case, the AppleTV will allow the second person to connect to the device and will remove the existing connection to the device.

Known Issues

The AppleTV boxes will go to sleep after a period of disuse. In order for the TV to see the device, you must wake up the device.
