Updating the GAL
The "local" GAL or "Offline Address Book"
There are two options for resolving a client-side issue with the offline address book
1) Toggle off cached exchange mode and then re-enable it after a sync is complete
2) Force a re-download of the offline address book.
Unless the sync errors for the clients are showing inability to update the offline address book, those are the two items that need to be addressed.
As a gut check anytime someone is curious if someone should be in the GAL, this is what you should check
1) is the person hidden from whitepages – if they are then they should be hidden in the GAL
- you can force early visibility in TuftsTools, but people should automatically show up 1-2 days after their start date here @ the university anyway and should not show up before their start date especially in the case of students.
2) is the person showing up in a normal OWA search. if they are, then it is a problem with the local mail client and not the global address book.
I don't believe you, there is something wrong with the OAB and the GAL!
Here are some things you can and should check if you think there is a problem with OAB and the GAL. Note, admin privs may be required.
Check Sync Errors in the Client
Check for Connection Errors with the Client and ensure "Directory Service" is connected
Check whether autodiscover resolves the OAB URL
Check in Exchange Management Console for the last GAL Publish Date (it should be todays date between 4am and 7am)
Check in Exchange Management Console to ensure that all CASHUB servers are publishing the GAL
Things to keep in mind
People join the university in waves, often at the start of semesters.
