Static IP Addresses and Hostnames
Note:
Some of this page's content may overlap with content on Assigning an IP address- Static IP or DHCP Reserved IP.
Assign a Static IP
- Sign into Bluecat
- Choose "IP Space"
- In almost all cases , click on "Public Tufts University Main"
- From here, you must identify what subnet the IP you are reserving should be on. This is often tied to the client's location on campus/in the building.
- Example: The TAB subnets are listed under the "Medford 5" Section
- Once you have navigated to the correct subnet, click "Action"->"Find First Unassigned IPV4 address" or, alternatively, scroll down to a unassigned IP address and click on it.
- Once you are in the assignment page, pick the correct category from the drop-down menu
- Static, Reserved, DHCP Reserved, Gateway
- In almost all cases, a "static IP" should be set to DHCP Reserved, not Static
- Include the MAC address of the network card and assign it a hostname, you can use the same naming convention as we do for computers: UIT[Dept][Initials]0#, and follow it with .uit.tufts.edu
- Example: uitadminnm01.uit.tufts.edu
- Leave "Create Reverse Record" checked. Check Internal and External. Include a descriptive address name (usually the clients full name is sufficient). Specify device can be left blank.
- Click Assign
- Changes made here can take up to an hour to go into effect
Reassign a Static IP
To reassign a static IP address from one MAC address to another (if, for example, someone gets a new computer), do the following:
- Navigate to the appropriate IP address
- Click the downward arrows next to the IP address for a drop-down menu
- Select "Edit this object"
- Erase the current MAC address and enter a new one
Change a Hostname
The best method for changing the hostname for a computer is to delete the current entry and recreate the static IP with the new hostname.
Change I.P from current MAC Address to another MAC Address
The easiest way to change these MAC à IP address affiliations is to do the following:
1) Go to the subnet in question and put a checkbox next to the static IP address you want to change the MAC for.
2) Select “Delete Selected” somewhere near the top
3) Go back to the IP address you want to assign the new MAC to (it will be greyed out as available I believe)
4) Make sure you select “DHCP Reserved” and put the new MAC address in the appropriate field (this will be found in drop down box)
Make sure internal and external are checked off
Once you save, you should see the MAC in there and when the next DHCP deployment is pushed the new MAC will get the DHCP address of the IP you specified.
