Manually creating an image using WinPE

Overview

People are generally most familiar with taking backups of computers through ghost cds but these are a pain to manage. Luckily, the we have moved away from Ghost and now we are using a feature in LanDESK, that can be run from a WinPE environment. This is especially easy because OIT already has a WinPE image with most network drivers for Dell machines due to Landesk OSD provisioning.

Instructions

  1. PXE boot as if you are going to build the computer. See here for details
  2. Once WinPE has loaded, click cancel at the credentials box
  3. Click the go button in the bottom left and open a new command prompt
  4. Type
     net use Z: \\titan\ldeskimages$
You will now be prompted to enter a username and password; use your tufts\UTLN and password
    net use Y: \\titan\share_you_want_to _back_up_to$
  5. Type
    Z:\tools\imagew.exe
  6. This should open the GUI for ImageW. You can now follow the interface and create an image. Make you you select the appropriate location to save the image (somewhere on the Y: drive)
