TTS VoIP Project Overview
Cisco Unified Call Manager (CUCM)
TTS is beginning a migration of telephone services from the current traditional platform to the IP-based Cisco Unified Call Manager platform. This will eliminate the need for separate copper connections and labor associated with wiring the cable plant whenever a phone is added or relocated. The transition will also allow Tufts to expand its voice services to better meet the needs of mobile users and provide additional unified communications solutions that will improve productivity and collaboration for all staff.
TTS has completed a proof-of-concept and most TTS staff have been transitioned to the new platform. The CUCM platform gives integration with the existing Cisco based Jabber client which may be utilized on desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Desktop telephones are available but it is no longer required to maintain a physical telephone set in order to make and receive calls using your Tufts telephone number. This will eliminate the need to publish or give out your mobile phone number for business purposes. On the CUCM platform, each client may have up to 10 devices on their Tufts telephone number. The Jabber client also has enhanced integration with the WebEx collaboration platform.
The biggest change for clients will be the change to 10-digit dialing for all calls, including internal calls, with no need to dial ‘9’ to reach an outside line. You will make all calls from your VoIP phone or Jabber client using only the 10-digit phone number, the same way you would place a call from a mobile phone. You can also access contacts from your phone or Jabber client and utilize click-to-call by searching for the name of the person you are calling.
