Backups

  • Items that have been deleted from Outlook are retained for 30 days and can be restored client-side or in OWA by recovering deleted items (in Outlook, Tools > Recover Deleted Items)
  • A special kind of backup, called a "frequent recovery point", is also taken throughout the day so Exchange can be recovered to within minutes of loss of data from only the last 24 hours.
  • Database backups are taken nightly and weekly.
    • Full backups are taken once a week.
    • Incremental backups are nightly.
    • The first full backup of every month is retained for a year.
    • Additional full backups every month are retained for a month.

Restores

  • For Exchange restores, users should be encouraged to use "Recover Deleted Items" for data lost within the past 30 days.
  • For all other restores, a request should be sent to UIT Client Support Center (to be escalated to UIT DataCenter Operations)

Information required to process a restore:

  • Username
  • Folder name
  • Restore files as of this date: the date which the last known good file was
  • Restore Destination: custom - only if the client wants the restore in a new location
