Overview

By default, IdentityFinder will scan your whole computer, searching through over 200 of the most common file types. You can also set IdentityFinder to search only the most common file-types. You can also choose whether to search common file-types anywhere on your computer, or only within your Documents folder (this includes files on your Desktop). Either option will lead to a quicker, but less thorough search. You can combine them for the quickest search of all, though of course it will miss anything outside your documents folder and any filetypes less likely to have PI.

Scan Only Common Files

To scan only the most common filetypes, as defined by IdentityFinder (Word, Excel, PDF, emails, etc.), follow these steps:

  1. Open IdentityFinder and enter your profile password (or create a new one, if this is the first time you've run IdentityFinder on this system).
  2. Click on the guarditidfinder:Locations tab, then click on the arrow below the guarditidfinder:Files button, then click on guarditidfinder:Customize File Settings.
  3. Click on guarditidfinder:Search Only Common File TypesFiles, and click OK. This will search only the most common file types.

Scan Only My Documents

To scan only your "My Documents" folder (including files on your desktop), and not your whole computer, follow these steps:

  1. Open IdentityFinder and enter your profile password (or create a new one, if this is the first time you've run IdentityFinder on this system).
  2. Click on the guarditidfinder:My Documents location.

Run A Search

Once you've selected the search settings you want, click on the guarditidfinder:Main tab and then click on the IdentityFinder guarditidfinder:Start Search button.
