Many eons ago, the Emerald server (emerald.uit.tufts.edu) hosted Tufts personal and departmental web sites, along with Pine email. All faculty, staff, and students were issued a whopping 5 MB of space on emerald to use as they wished. Web editing to Emerald was done through SecureCRT with Unix commands. When Web Services broke away from TCCS (UIT) to become Web Communications, a new support model for Emerald sites was never established, leaving existing sites and their owners as orphans. Around 2005, email service on emerald was turned off and it was decided that no new sites would be allowed.
