History
Many eons ago, the Emerald server (emerald.uit.tufts.edu) hosted Tufts personal and departmental web sites, along with Pine email. All faculty, staff, and students were issued a whopping 5 MB of space on Emerald to use as they wished. Most web edits to Emerald sites were done through SecureCRT with Unix commands.
When Web Services broke away from TCCS (UIT) to become Web Communications, a new support model for Emerald sites was never established, leaving existing sites and their owners as orphans. Around 2006 , email service on Emerald was turned off and it was decided that no new sites would be allowed. Many sites were converted to Thinwire, a home-grown content management tool developed by Web Communications. But once every few months or so, a request to either move or delete an old Emerald site comes in through TechConnect. Hopefully, this section will provide enough information to support the process.
Most user requests are to delete old sites and/or place a forward on the old site to automatically send viewers to the new site. One or all of the following steps are usually involved.
Steps
1.) Find the old site directory (see SitePaths)on Emerald and see if you have access to copy/edit/or delete the contents.
2.) Download a copy of web directory in case the client wants an archive. Do this before you make any changes so that you can replace anything that goes south during the process.
