How to Capture an Image in WinPE

Once your reference image is created you must then capture the image before it can be deployed.  Before capturing the image you should ensure that the image is syspreped with /generalize /oobe options.   Prior to LANDesk SP3, you needed to capture your image in Audit mode however beginning in SP3, LANDesk recommends capturing in OOBE (Out of Box Experience) mode.

 The LANDesk OSD and Provisioning module is imaging tool agnostic and can be used with a with a wide variety of imaging tools.  You may use whichever tool you are familiar with, provided you have approach licensing.  

Imaging tools

  • ImageW
    • ImageW is sector-based imaging tool (like Ghost) that comes bundled and licensed with LANDesk.  It is the recommended method for capturing and deploying images.
  • LANDesk:Norton Ghostt
    • Norton Ghost can also be used to capture and deploy images with LANDesk, provided you have appropriate licensing.  Historically, Norton Ghost has been used at Tufts since most technicians are familiar with using Ghost as an imaging tool
  • ImageX
    • ImageW is a file-based imaging tool from Microsoft.  It can also be used to capture and deploy images using LANDesk; It uses the .wim file format. It is distributed as part of the free Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK).
  • No labels
