Description

Pay-for-Print is a system that enables users in library, labs and public spaces to copy or print to various networked print or copy devices conveniently located in several locations on each campus utilizing funds stored via JumboCash on their Tufts ID card.  Users without a Tufts ID card can purchase Guest Cards at several locations and add value to that card in order to print or copy. The system currently uses a software product called Pharos

History

The Pay-for-Print program started in 2003 when the libraries, under the University Library Council (ULC) and the A&S labs decided to eliminate free printing due to the large costs of underwriting it.  A RFP was sent out and a contract was signed with Conway Office Solutions to provide a Pay-for-Print system.  Conway had been providing both public and staff copier services to the libraries for a number of years.  Due to the fact Conway was mainly a hardware vendor and had little experience in the software side of things they sub-contracted the software side to Marketing Data Solutions (MDS) who had significant experience in Pay-for-Print systems and more importantly, in card swipe systems and integrating them into campus card systems.   The contract specified that Conway would supply all hardware with the exception of the servers, which would be provided and maintained by Tufts.  At the time, Hirsch was running a Pharos Pay-for-Print system on their own, with no connection to Conway or MDS.   When the second contract was signed, Hirsch became a part of it and so was also supported by Conway and MDS.

Support

Support for the Pay-for-Print system is provided by End User Computing.  Small problems such as paper jams and supply refills are provided by Tufts staff at each print/copy location.  Major hardware support is provided by Conway Office Systems and support for the Pharos software is provided by Managment Data Solutions (MDS)
